2. Restoran Uncle Pou Wok (補镬佬菜馆)

Uncle Pou Wok has branches in Mount Austin, Impian Emas and Bukit Indah – this simple no air con shop lot in Permas Jaya is the first Uncle Pou Wok restaurant, founded over 20 years ago. Many of the customers here are long time regulars. This outlet is now run by Uncle Pou Wok’s daughter who is very friendly to customers.

Middle age service staff were also cheerful and helpful. (Uncle Pou Wok is retired and no longer regular in the restaurant.)

The first thing you must order at Pou Wok Lou is their signature KL Hokkien mee or Tai Lok Meen 大碌面. Uncle Pou Wok’s rendition is less salty and less lardy than the most hard core KL versions. Uncle Pou Wok’s tai lok meen (fat noodles) are tender and have a nice soft springy bounce to the bite.

They are well enveloped with layers of savouriness complemented by lardiness, caramelised garlic and subtle sweetness which I like. Springy tender strips of dry sotong added their characteristic savoury taste to the noodles.

Fish Head Steamboat is one of Uncle Pou Wok’s signatures as well. The steamboat soup is robustly salty savoury sourish sweet, with salty sourish taste dominant.

5. The Bak Kut Teh is Here (这里有肉骨茶)

Sini Ada Bak Kut Teh is a new kid on the block and its style of Bak Kut Teh was different from what people are familiar with in Johor Bahru. Everything in the restaurant was spic and spank, and the ordering system too uses the latest wireless technology and mobile devices. Still, the atmosphere was cosy and relaxed. The staff in cheery yellow tops greeted every customer in an earnest and cheerful way as they arrive and as they leave.

The bak kut teh is in the soupy Teochew style but it tastes different from the popular old names in Johor Bahru. It is not surprising then that Johoreans are split between those who welcome this new flavour and others who prefer the old familiar taste. The soup here is thicker than the usual Teochew style Bak Kut Teh and there is very little of the savoury sweetness that Johor Bahru Teochew Bak Kut Teh is famous for.

The taste of herbs is present with a very subtle hint of “kam” flavour – the kind of taste that we get from dried Mandarin orange peel. The “kam” taste lingered in the mouth for a while after eating. The meat was the firmer kind similar to other popular places that serve Teochew style Bak Kut Teh. You have to try it and decide for yourself if you like it or not.
