For the cheapest way to travel from Singapore to either jetty, you can take the bus. However, it is also a more time-consuming journey due to the many stops and transfers you will need to make.

The first leg of the journey requires you to get from Singapore to the bus terminal in Malaysia. Typically, travellers go to Larkin Sentral bus terminal in Johor Bahru to take another bus to Mersing Jetty.

Unfortunately, there are no direct buses from Larkin to Tanjung Gemok Jetty. If you must get to Tanjung Gemok Jetty, you will have to get to Mersing first then take a taxi. The ride will cost you around RM50-100 and 30 minutes.

At Mersing Jetty or Tanjung Gemok Jetty, getting a ferry is quite simple. Look for the ferry ticket counter operated by Blue Water Express to get your tickets.

Ferry To Tioman Island

Ferry Fare to Tioman island One way: RM35 (adult) / RM30 (child: 2-11 years old)

The ferry ride to Tioman takes about 1.5-2 hours, subject to weather conditions.

Once you have obtained your ferry tickets, head to the Marine Park Permit counter. You need to pay a small conservation fee to enter Tioman Island. The fee is used to maintain the island and contribute to the conservation of nature on the island.

Best Time To Visit Tioman Island

You want to be able to enjoy the best of Tioman Island in nice sunny weather. The best time to visit is between March and October. If possible, you should avoid going during the monsoon periods when it is rainy. During this period, the ferry frequencies are also fewer and many resorts do not operate.

Best Time To Dive

Scuba-diving in Tioman is possible from February to November during the dry season. The best visibility is during March-May and September-November (15-30m). In June to August, the weather is good but visibility may be compromised (8-12m). During these warm periods, you can enjoy warm water temperatures of around 27-29°C.

A word of advice for travellers going to Tioman Island:

  • Don’t expect Wi-Fi coverage islandwide. If you need to be connected, do get a local data sim card or activate your roaming services.
  • Bring enough cash in ringgit. ATMs are rare in Tioman Island, with most found only at Kampong Tekek (Berjaya).
  • Take advantage of the duty-free shopping at Tioman Island. Most of the duty-free shops take credit card payments as well.
  • If you want to dive on your trip, it might be worth it to book a diving package from a travel agent or resort for a better price.
