They started in 1919 and has a history of more than 100 years. It originated from an Englishman who opened it in a dilapidated shophouse in the old town of Johor Bahru. But in the 1930s, he transferred the business to the Lim family.

They have always been loved by people from all walks of life, especially the Sultan of Johor. So despite the advancement of times and technology, the Lim family continues to bake banana cakes in a unique and traditional way .

They use a traditional wood fired oven – a hole in the wall with a built in oven. Past and present, they stick to rubber or bacau trees for fired oven to bake with temperature controls and timers.

Mr Lim Toh Shian believes that the success of Hiap Joo Bakery Johor is entirely due to its baking method. He said that cakes baked in built-in ovens are completely different from modern ovens, both in terms of aroma and taste. This is key makes them a famous banana cake shop in JB.

From its inception until 2003, it only sold French Loaves and Sandwich loaves. After Mr Lim Toh Shian entered the business, he reformed the sales of products to sell banana cakes and bread. Since then, they have switched from Western desserts to local pastries in Malaysia.

Since his father’s death, Hiap Joo business is going down and heading toward bankruptcy. Therefore, after discussing with his sons, Mr Lim Toh Shian decided to change the sales products to create higher profits for this business.

As popularity grew, the idea proved fruitful. It has successfully become the best banana cake in Johor Bahru.
