The gravy is a little cheesy. It’s not stringy, like an Italian dish, but the cheese taste is in the gravy. It’s really like a Crab Bee Hoon Soup from Mellben, but along with milk there is cheese in the soup. A must-try dish when you are here.

This probably explains the appearance of some Hakka cuisine on the menu.

The business has been passed down the generations and even the little boy in red sleeveless tee shirt appearing in the blurred photo above who is the younger son of the current towkay helps out with the family business over weekends and during school holidays.

Top 12 Places to go for Breakfast in Melaka

The shop opens really early, before 6 am and quietens down after the morning“yum cha” crowd dies off when the dim sum items run out as well. It is advisable to come earlier to avoid waiting for too long for a table and be expected to share a larger table with other dim sum dollies.

The lor mai gai, which is the steamed boneless chicken over glutinous rice is very good to try. The chunks of chicken are soft and succulent, and very well-seasoned with an assertive taste of pepper. Their steamed glutinous rice wrapped with lotus leaves is apparently another very popular item.

The texture of the glutinous rice here better than in the lor mai gai, with a bit more bite and the rice being somewhat more “individually grained” compared to lor mai gai.

If you happen to be staying nearby, like the numerous guesthouses along Jalan Tukang Besi, do remember to visit Low Yong Moh Restaurant to enjoy a few types of dim sum with Chinese tea for your early breakfast option before continuing with your day of sightseeing.

7. Ban Hong Xiang Tea House

Ban Hong Xiang Tea House is serving nice Dim Sum and located along Jalan Gajah Berang, about 100 meter away from KFC Plaza Malacca.

One of their signature dim sums is their juicy big bun (Tua Pao). The gravy flew out the moment you peeled the outer layer. In north region of peninsular Malaysia, you hardly see such a juicy Tua Pao ordered by almost every single table in a Dim Sum restaurant. Most people will get irritated after consuming half of it but for Ban Hong Xiang in Malacca, one customer, one Tua Pao.

Besides Tua Pao, they do have other dim sums such as carrot cake, siew mai, chicken legs, and char siew pao.

Ban Hong Xiang is perhaps the only dim sum restaurant you will see each patron eating a bug bun instead of sharing it. No doubt it is one of their signature dishes. This is a traditional dim sum shop worth trying in Malacca.

8. Restoran Tong Sheng

The unassuming name of Restoran Tong Sheng is actually quite famous in the internet. It is one of the top few searches that appear when you Googled for “Best Places to Eat At Melaka”.

Restaurant Tong Sheng is run by a father (Master Lee) and son (Chef Lee) duo. Master Lee has been honing his culinary skills since the age of 12 as a hokkien mee chef. And, thankfully, Chef Lee has inherited his father’s talent and the spirit of innovation in creating new dishes.

Restoran Tong Sheng is the pioneer of Cheesy Prawn Meehun (RM35/70/105) in Malacca. It is inspired by Hong Kong’s Lobster Cheese Noodles. Chef Lee uses huge prawns instead of lobster as the main ingredient. The cheese melts nicely into the slightly watery gravy and the mix has just the right amount of creaminess.

It isn’t too thick so you won’t find the taste overwhelming after a few mouthfuls. The freshness and sweetness of the prawns are distinct. There’s even prawn roe scattered around the dish.

Fresh Milk Crabs is another signature dishes in Restaurant Tong Sheng. The minimum order is 2 crabs (seasonal price). The gravy is very unusual, with a hint of tanginess. It is highly recommended as you won’t find something like this in Singapore. The lightness of the gravy allows us to fully savor the crustacean sweetness.

Salted Egg Yolk Beancurd is another highly recommended dish by chef. It is basically steamed tofu with prawns, topped with powdery salted egg yolk and spring onions. The bits of salted egg yolk added more flavor to the tofu, and also give the dish a different texture.

It is best eaten with a bowl of fragrant white rice. It is best to arrive around 4.30pm, and be among the first batch of diners to be seated in the restaurant. The pricing is reasonable, and the food is excellent. If you’re visiting Malacca for a weekend, you have to try Restoran Tong Sheng at least once.

9. Ban Lee Siang

Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup is definitely one of the places to savor satay celup which will be recommended or preferred by most Malaccans, reason was because there usually be a very long queue in the famous Capitol Satay Celup, especially weekends and public holidays, yet, the taste is pretty much the same.

In fact, Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup is much cheaper compared to Capitol’s and the shop has more than 21 years of history. With the price of Rm 0.60 per stick, it’s definitely very cheap and worth of trying. The place is not too far away from the famous tourist attraction– Jonker Walk.

Before you begin, you will need to take a tray and proceed to the fridges beside the tables and choose the ingredients you wish to try. In fact, there are more than 50 types of choices available and the best part was, every single stick costs Rm0.60 only, no matter what you are taking, it’s still Rm0.60 per stick.

There were the usual fish balls, oyster mushrooms, vegetables, sausages, prawns, pig’s liver, clams, Yao Char Kwai (deep fried bread dough) and many more. After you have selected your choices of the satay celup ingredients, you may then dip all of them into the soup at once.

You do not need any other dipping sauces as the mixture of sweet satay sauce and peanuts will be very favorable and good enough to give you the right taste to savour them. The locals love Yao Char Kwai (油条)/deep fried bread dough as the Yao Char Kwai is able to absorb the sauce, making it very special and unique, yet tasty.

If you happen to travel around in Malacca, do stop by Ban Lee Siang to try out their satay.
