PULAU BESAR – THE BIG ISLAND

Blessed with breathtaking clear sapphire sea, white sandy beach and bight blue sky, this island had become a setting of foreign reality show and would you believe that a series of “Seven Season” was taken on this island?Yes, we are talking about Pulau Besar! This island is located just off the East Coast of Johor and is a perfect venue for a relaxing holiday and even weddings or honeymoon.

In Chinese, Pulau Beasr is equivalent to “Bertha Island”, which means “Big Island”. And due to Pulau Besar had attracted many filming teams from all around the world, had now becoming the eyes of Western travelers’ paradise island.

TO-DO-LIST IN PULAU BESAR

1. ISLAND HOPPING

After reaching Pulau Besar, the first activity that you should try out would be their island hopping. This activity requires at least eight people in a team and you need to register yourself at the reception to sign up for it. Snorkeling gears and life jackets would be provided after signing up and there would be a local boatman to guide and explain the history of Pulau Besar to you. Three boat trip’s spots options would be provided too; Pulau Hujung, Pulau Tengah and the back of Pulau Besar. However, according to the boat man, there would be no resort available on Pulau Hujung.

2.SNORKELING

Do you want to dive with numerous tropical fishes and sightseeing some colorful corals? Your next underwater adventure is calling! Grab a mask and dive in one of the best snorkeling spot in Pulau Besar! While snorkeling, you would be able to see hundred of marine species, from blenny fish each only 3 inches long, to toadfish, a pancake-flat, whiskered bottom-dweller that betrays its hiding spots when emitting a loud croak.

Since Pulau Besar offered a wide range of marine life, hence it is listed in Marine Park’s preservation list. Please remember that no corals picking and fish catching are allowed during snorkeling.

3. CANOEING

Why not giving it a try? Canoeing on Pulau Besar’s clear blue sea along with beloved family and friends would be fun, you may even conduct your own mini competitions among them too. Renting of canoes and oak would be offered with an affordable price and of course, please remember to grab your life jacket too.

4. JUNGLE TREKKING

There is a route behind Asenia Beach Resort which will lead you up and across the jungle mountain to the back side of Pulau Besar where the quite beach awaits. It might be easy at the beginning, as there is still some old handwritten road signs to guide you. However, there were lots of boulders and the trekking path was not very well maintained and was kinda misleading on its midway. If you would like to try, we highly recommend to get a guide from the reception and trek it with a group of friends.

5.CHECK OUT THE BEACH

Take your time exploring Pulau Besar’s beach and other parts of the island near the beach. You may experience the kampung (village) feel from the indigenous people living here for generations. While strolling, you would be able to found out that there is still some kampung spirit retained house which s built in traditional Malay architecture also.

6.EXCITING BEACH VOLLEYBALL & BEACH ACTIVITIES

Still remember when is your last time playing a great match of volleyball? Well, here at Pulau Besar, you will be provided with a chance to experience nice volleyball game with the tourists and locals there. This activity is free and you would gain a lot of friends via this game also if you give it a try.

Besides, still remember the swings you saw while strolling along the beach? Do they bring you back to your childhood memories? Don’t be shy and give it a try also, you can relax yourself up there while sight-viewing the beautiful and calming beach.

7. BARBECUE SEAFOOD DINNER

After a tiring day of beach activities, it’s time to refresh yourself with a barbecue dinner available on the island. The island provides marvelous seafood barbecue buffet dinner with endless stream of barbecue prawn, oysters, grilled fish, chicken satays and lamb. This could be a heaven for every foodie and barbecue lovers. Besides, there would be live band performance by the locals there, bringing back the oldies to cap off your trip.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Travel on the months of October to March, which is the rainy season is the best.

Here is the sweet reminder, the island will be closed during March to September. So, do not visit the island between the months.

The peak season is around April to July and also May to June is the most popular season as the sea is most clear during May to June.
