1. Sri Raja Mariamman Temple Johor Bahru

This historic building is one of the oldest Hindu temple in Johor Bahru which is over a hundred years. It is located in the core area of Little India along Jalan Ungku Puan which is a 10-minute walk from Amari Johor Bahru.

 

This attractive temple is also known as Arulmigu Raja Mariamman Temple which was built in December 1911. At beginning, the temple is known as Mariamman Temple. To appreciate the donation of Sultan Johor, Sultan Ibrahim who donated an acre of land and RM5000 to the founder, Mr. Kootha Perumal Vandayar, the word “Raja” with the meaning King was added to the name of the temple.

From the grand outside of the building, you will see those arts which based on the Dravidian architecture of Southern India. These beautiful and attracted Hindu art are able to see on the walls of the temple.

Another amazing symbol of this temple is the main pyramid tower called Gopuram, it is painted with the light pastel cream tone with the colourful deities that surround each of the five tiers. As a visitor, you are advised to use a telephoto lens to take the photographs so that you are able to see the exquisitely

A lot of meaningful events such as weddings or special prayer ceremonial are held at this extraordinary temple. For your information, visitors should adhere to temple’s dress code before going into the temple. Visitors are not allowed to wear shorts, caps, mini-skirts, sunglasses, socks or slippers.

2. Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple

It is a famous landmark of Johor Bahru and well known by all the local Chinese community. Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple located in Johor Bahru town city centre along Jalan Trus. This Old Chinese Temple is one of the oldest religious institute in Johor Bahru. This valued Chinese Temple was built by religious Chinese leaders who headed by Mr. Tan Hiok Nee who was the founder of Ngee Heng Co.

Most of the prayers will purposely come and visit this temple which rich of history and cultural roots over 140 years. The most significant and meaningful event of this temple is the Chingay of this temple. The Chingay celebration will take place annually and normally on 20th-23rd in the first lunar month of Chinese calendar.

During the chingay, the statue deities that represent the five dialect groups which are the Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka and Hainan will be paraded around the town.

The design of JB Old Chinese Temple is classic Chinese styles. There are a lot of large potted plants that placed along the white walls, the eye-catching design is popular for young visitors to take some photos. As you step in the temple, you will see there are many colourful bells around the walls which are contributed by the visitors who have prayed at this temple.

3. Tiong Hua Chinese Heritage Museum

This heritage building was built in 1948 as an office for the Tiong Hua Chinese Association. In 2005, it was being renovated and labelled as a museum. All visitors regardless of their religions will come and visit this place due to its history.

It is a four-storey shop house, the exterior design seem harmony and you are able to see a pair of long hanging red Chinese lanterns outside the building. Different floor of the museum displayed various collection of exhibits and artefacts to preserve the unique history of Chinese immigrants.

When you move into the ground floor of historic building, you can see the valued records of Chinese arriving in Malaysia. The museum show the records how the Chinese back to the Ming Dynasty for trade and business. Besides, the exhibitions also displayed information about how Chinese from the five dialects group, the Hainanese, Hakka, Cantonse, Teochew and Hokkien comes to Johor Bahru and start their new lives in this wonderful country.

Many photos, news articles, books, suitcases and artefacts of Chinese immigrants between 1800s and 1900s are displayed in the museum. On the other hand, visitors are able to learn about the history of World War II and how the Chinese fought against Japanese during the tough time.

Just need to spend about RM5.00 for adults, RM2.00 for senior citizen and children, you can get a lot of meaningful knowledge and memories from there!

4. Johor Bahru Prison

 

It is an eye-opening experience for you to visit Johor Bahru Prison. The dirty walls and the huge iron gates follow with the strict rules, the appearance of the building may not attracted you. However, the information inside the prison will definitely increase your knowledge and experiences!

The 135-year-old prison was opened for the public to visit. The purpose of the exhibition was to create the public awareness toward the life within the prison. Visitors have the chances to see the prison facilities, caning demonstration through video and talk from officers.

Johor Bahru Prison was designed by Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar ibni Almarhum Daeng Ibrahim. Sultan visited to prison in Shanghai and Osaka to learn about the physical condition and design of the prisons. Every space within the Johor Bahru prison is fully utilized, it involved accommodation blocks for inmates, training workshops, kitchen, toilet block, clinic and administrative office. Besides, this prison also consists of a family visiting area, counseling clinic, welfare officer’s room and surau.

It is deserve to spend RM 5.00 for adults and RM 2.00 for children to visit this amazing place.

5. Bank Negara Malaysia Johor Bahru

 

Bank Negara Malaysia Johor Bahru play the major role in conducting and applying the demand and policy set by the head office in Kuala Lumpur.

It was established on 26 January 1959 under the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 1958 (CBA 1958). It was the central bank of Malaysia and provided important advices to the Malaysia’s government. The Central Bank of Malaysia Act 2009 cancelled the CBA 1958 and became effective on 25 November 2009.

This bank provide walk-in counter services for banking activities and information enquiries as well as complains about bank services. When you are free, do go and have a look this landmark building in Johor Bahru.

6. Johor Bahru Old Railway Station

JB old railway station is the first-ever train museum in Malaysia. This historical site in Johor Bahru is an 85-year-old building and has been stop for services since July 2010. This symbolic old railway station as a tourist spot of Johor Bahru, it witnessed the development of this city.

This old railway station is conserved as a KTMB Mini Museum for Southern Region of Malaysia. The yellow colour walls accompany with the contrasting blue colour attracted the sight of tourists. The western architecture made the old railway station shows a very unique looking. Tourists visit this place and take some photos in this popular building.

7. Johor Bahru High Court

 

This is a classical and beautiful High Court building was built during British colonial administration together with headquarter of polis station at Jalan Ayer Molek. Johor Bahru High Court was built in late 1800s when Johor was under the control of Sultan Abu Bakar. Later in 1928, this high court was moved to Jalan Dato’Onn and locate at there until now.

This high court holds session court as well as the magistrate courts. In front of the High Court, there is a fountain and monument bearing Johor’s coat-of-arms. The design of this high court shows the Italian Renaissance architecture.

8. Sultan Ibrahim Building Johor Bahru

Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim is a former state secretariat building of Johor. And One Of The Must Go Johor Bahru Historical Places . This building was started to build in 1936 and completed in 1940. It was the tallest building in Johor Bahru until 1970s when the Merlin Tower was built.

 

It is a memorial combination of western and eastern architecture. This building proved that traditional and modern civilization can be combined harmoniously together.

In 1942, which is the Japanese occupation in Malaya, this building as a place for them to plan their invasion of Singapore. Some of the parts of the building are damaged during the invasion and still able to see today. To enter this historical building and visit this memorial place, visitors have to get the permission from the security guards.

9. Holy Light Johor Bahru

This is one of the oldest Johor Bahru Historical Places and oldest churches in Johor Bahru ,  Holy Light Johor Bahru was founded by Rev John Angus Bethune Cook, a missionary of Presbyterian Church of England. With the help from outstanding people, Cook was success to build up the church. This ancient building proved that Christianity had been in Malaysia for a long time.

 

It used to responsible in running English and Mandarin services on Sunday as well as used for Chinese worship sessions. As time passed, the old church is currently used as the Youth Hall.

When you step into this old church, you will feel peace and relax. It’s just next to the grand looking Double Tree by Hilton Johor Bahru.

10. Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple Johor Bahru

If you want to learn more about the culture of Sikh, do not hesitate to have a look in Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple. This white and yellow colour temple located in the heart of Johor Bahru, next to the Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam Temple. This Gurdwara Sahib completed with kitchen, hall, dining room, and office. Besides, prayers rooms will be provided to the Sikh visitors.

In 1916, Sikhs requested a piece of land from the Johor Police Commissioner to build a Sikh Gurdwara. The ground floor of this Gurdwara is used as a langgar hall and the upstairs is used for Darbar Sahib. A committee team were formed and work together to manage the operation of this Gurdwara including a president, secretary, treasurer and other committee members.

This building is a meaningful symbol for the Sikh community in Malaysia. There are about 250 Sikh families will come and join the religious activities in this Gurdwara Sahib. The activities including normal weekly prayers, the naujawan programmes and the isteri satsang programmes.

11. Bazar Karat Johor Bahru

 

This is a street that full of friendly hawkers which selling things in cheaper price including clothes, shoes, food, drinks, accessories, toys and other daily stuffs. There are even haircut stall and henna design in the bazar.

This street market used to be a place that sold a lot of old items and now this is a place to find cheaper local products in this street market. Another interesting thing in this bazar is the performances by the local small band. To learn more and understand about the culture of the local, you are recommended to come Johor Bahru Bazar and have a look! People in here are sociable and the price of things are negotiable.

12. Johor Bahru Post Office

 

This white-painted three-storey building is located next to the Johor Bahru City Mall, just a walking distance from the Johor Bahru High Court.

Officially opened in August 25, 1963, Johor Bahru Post Office’s opening ceremony was attended and held by the late king of Johor – Sultan Ismail.

Another interesting fact is that the building is actually a hotel which served the community for years before being rebuilt as a post office.
